New to CycloCross?
Some readers may be wondering just what is CycloCross?
Sometimes called ‘cross or cx, it involves riders completing multiple laps of a short course (anything from 0.5 miles to 1.5 miles) of mainly off-road terrain. The races are often held in parks or sports grounds so the riding isn’t like mountain biking with sustained periods of climbing or descending and very technical sections. Instead riders will be confronted with natural and man-made obstacles that they will have to dismount from their bike to negotiate. Each lap will feature one or more of these obstacles. Typically other sections of the course will feature a mix of grass, mud and tarmac (sometimes even sand) with short climbs and descents. Although many riders choose to use a specific cyclocross bike (think of a road bike with skinny but knobbly tyres and you’re somewhere close) most races let you ride a mountain bike. Women’s races can last between 30 minutes to an hour. The ‘cross season typically runs from September to March and every weekend will see races being held up and down the country. Entry fees are relatively inexpensive and lots of races let you enter on the day.
Cyclocross is gaining in popularity, no doubt due to the friendly nature of the sport and actively welcomes new riders. You don’t have to have amazing bike handling skills or super human levels of fitness to take part, though due to the addictive nature of the sport you will soon find both of these improving as you find yourself racing more and more.
The CSP Cyclocross will see the women have their own race, so no lining up with other categories of riders. We are hoping that both existing and new riders will come along and take part. If you are already a keen ‘cross rider then we hope to see you there. Never ridden ‘cross and feeling a little unsure? Well drop me a line or give me a call and I will be happy to answer any questions you have. If there is enough demand we may run a women’s only cycling day/weekend.
We hope to see you there!
